The Golshani, Silva, and Khakh Labs at the University of California, Los Angeles, with Daniel Aharoni as main coordinator collaborated in the development of the Miniscope. Its design was pioneered by Mark Schnitzer's Lab at Stanford and published in Nature Methods in 2011. The UCLA miniscope community maintains a WiKi to help disseminate this open source technology to the larger neuroscience community.

The Data Acquisition (DAQ) system connects to the CMOS Digital Image Sensor on the Miniscope V4 Rigid Flex PCB for data acquisition and sensor control. The DAQ connects to the PC via a USB 3.0 cable. It enumerates as a generic webcam using the USB Video Class (UVC) device protocol. Two extra digital I/O ports can synchronize external equipment. This imaging sensor is compatible with both UCLA Miniscope V4 and V3. 

The LabMaker DAQ system comes in a solid, black coated aluminum case that is unbreakable. This milled from the block case shields from electromagnetic interference. It is fully tested with the V4 firmware installed. To use it with the Miniscope the UCLA data acquisition software must be installed on your PC.
