Founding developer Thomas Akam

Thomas Akam is a neuroscientist at the Oxford University Department of Experimental Psychology. He is the lead developer of the @pyControl and @pyPhotometry open source projects. His work links computational accounts of flexible behaviour with large-scale behavioural experiments and neural recording and manipulation approaches, including silicon-probe electrophysiology, fiber photometry, and optogenetics. In this context, pyControl is not merely an experiment-control package, but part of a broader effort to make complex behavioural neuroscience more scalable, transparent, and reproducible.

Port Expander

Part of the pyControl behavioural experimental system

The port expander board expands a single behaviour port on the breakout board to 8 behaviour ports. It uses a serial to parallel IO expander (datasheet). It must be connected to a behaviour port with I2C (ports 3 and 4 on breakout 1.2).

!!! Electrical safety !!!

The port expander can draw power either from the the behaviour port or from a 12V power supply connected to the expander board using the 2.1mm barrel plug. See more
