Founding developer Thomas Akam

Thomas Akam is a neuroscientist at the Oxford University Department of Experimental Psychology. He is the lead developer of the @pyControl and @pyPhotometry open source projects. His work links computational accounts of flexible behaviour with large-scale behavioural experiments and neural recording and manipulation approaches, including silicon-probe electrophysiology, fiber photometry, and optogenetics. In this context, pyControl is not merely an experiment-control package, but part of a broader effort to make complex behavioural neuroscience more scalable, transparent, and reproducible.

pyControl - Breakout Board

Part of the pyControl behavioural experimental system

The pyControl Breakout Board forms the core of each pyControl hardware setup. It interfaces a pyboard microcontroller with a set of 6 behaviour ports, 4 BNC connectors, indicator LEDs and user pushbuttons. Many setups, each with their own breakout board, can be controlled from a single computer via USB.

pyControl peripherals used to construct the behavioural setup connect to the breakout boards behaviour ports.

!!! Electrical safety !!!

When connecting devices to breakout boards it is important to consider the amount of current they will draw. More info
