The AudioMoth, Hydromoth and MicroMoth were created by two computer science PhD students at the University of Southampton, Andrew Hill and Peter Prince, together with Alex Rogers, a computer science professor at the University of Oxford. The AudioMoth was the first product of their OpenAcousticDevices initiative.

The AudioMoth GPS Board is an add-on that enhances the functionality of the AudioMoth acoustic recorder by providing GPS capabilities and a magnetic switch, making it ideal for fieldwork applications. LABmaker offers the PA1616S variant, which connects to the GPS satellite systems for improved accuracy and reliability in challenging environments, without over consumption of power. The magnetic switch enables users to turn the device on or off without opening the enclosure, offering exceptional convenience for outdoor research where precise location data and ease of use are crucial.
